His career path

For more than 20 years, Dr. Philippe Collin has devoted himself exclusively to shoulder surgery. He has operated on over 20,000 shoulders, performing 200 shoulder replacements per year. More than 100 scientific publications, 5 academic distinctions, and 37 international orthopaedic surgeons trained.
An unconventional path
After training as a nurse in Bondy, Dr. Philippe Collin passed the medical school entrance exam in Paris, secured a place in orthopaedic surgery and specialised in shoulder surgery from an early stage. He spent 20 years heading the shoulder surgery unit of a private hospital in Rennes. Dr. Collin developed a particular interest in shoulder replacement surgery, training alongside leading surgeons across France, Europe and the United States.
His commitment to training
“fellows” and to scholarly societies
Every semester, Dr. Philippe Collin welcomes and contributes to the training of international young orthopaedic surgeons in the highly specialised field of shoulder surgery, particularly shoulder replacement. More than 60 have benefited to date. He also chairs the European Society for Surgery of the Shoulder and the Elbow (SECEC) and is a corresponding member of the prestigious American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons society (ASES). He previously served as president of the French Society for Shoulder and Elbow Surgery (SoFEC).

The importance
of
publishing

« The magazine Le Point has just published a ranking of expert physicians, in which I am ranked the best orthopaedic shoulder surgeon in Paris. However, I would like to emphasise that being recognised as an expert does not necessarily define the quality of a doctor. Our profession demands qualities that cannot easily be measured. Despite this, I have often asked myself: why publish, especially when working in the private sector? I can only answer based on my own experience. In 2002, after my clinical fellowship, I had only two referenced publications and I did not see the value of publishing. However, three events changed my perspective. First, meeting Gilles Walch, a practitioner unanimously recognised in the world of modern shoulder surgery. Gilles worked in private practice, and I went to see him to improve my technical skills. I left with the conviction of the importance of publishing. A few years later, Gilles Walch introduced me to practitioners at the renowned Mayo Clinic in the United States. I expected to be impressed, but I realised that their strength lay in the quality of their database, which enabled them to publish high-quality studies. This inspired me to create my own database, in which all my patients are recorded. I now have nearly 15,000 shoulder operations in this database, and I plan to share these data in the near future.

Finally, I work within the Vivalto Santé group, where we have created a department dedicated to supporting practitioners who wish to publish. More than 10 years ago, Daniel Caille, co-founder of the group, assured me he would help me publish — and he kept his word.

Publishing does not make me a better practitioner than others. However, it allows me to analyse my outcomes and share my knowledge with my colleagues, in order to improve the quality of our daily care and patient management. »
